Frequently asked questions: Roof maintenance and installation

All Seasons Roofing in Peterborough, Ontario, knows that homeowners often have many questions regarding the maintenance of their roof. To help them better understand here are three of the more frequently asked questions regarding roofs:

When should I replace my shingles?

Optimally your roof should last 20 years; unfortunately, factors such as weather, wildlife, and improper installation often shorten that time. If you are unsure whether your shingles need to be replaced there are several signs that indicate you should. If your shingles are curling, this is a sign of excessive moisture that could lead to more damage if not fixed. If you find shingle granules in your eaves trough, this is a rather advanced sign of wear and if your shingles are deteriorating it is imperative that you replace them. If your shingles are buckling – whether from improper installation or poor ventilation – be sure to correct the problem before it leads to further damage. Any indication of damage (water or otherwise) to your roof could indicate that it may be time to replace or repair your roof.

Should I install a metal roof?

There are many reasons metal roofs are becoming more popular for residential customers. Metal roofs generally last longer, they are more durable than other materials. Metal is environmentally friendly, more efficient and it helps to maintain a comfortable temperature, thus ultimately lowering costs. While the initial cost of a metal roof can be two to three times more than other materials, over time it can actually work out to be much less than that of other roofs.

There are some downsides to a metal roof; they can be noisy, and hail can damage and dent the metal.

How should I clean my eavestrough?

The best way to clean your eavestrough is by hand or using a small garden trowel. As you will require a ladder to access your eavestrough, it is safest to use something that can be easily handled. It is not recommended to use a pressure washer it could be difficult or unsafe to do on a ladder, and if angled incorrectly, could damage your eavestrough. Remember to clean them frequently, build-up of debris can lead to damaged eavestroughs or water seeping into your foundation.
